I learned the forecast before I chased the view
I wanted to leave after work and land somewhere I had only seen from the highway. That was the whole dream. No schedule to keep for anyone else. A ramp, a walk into town, dinner that did not come with a connection through a hub.
I am a private pilot. I added the instrument rating because too many weekends were dying in a forecast I could not really read. The rating did not make me bold. It made the decision easier to say out loud. Go, or don't, and know which one it is.
The instrument written was the first time the charts stopped being decorations. I studied until the questions I kept missing came back and felt ordinary. After that the flights got better. Not busier. Better. I pick places I have fuel and daylight for. If the picture changes, I land short and rent a car. That is still a good trip.
Friends come sometimes. A lot of the hours are just me and the airplane, which is a different kind of rewarding from hauling a family to the coast or flying someone else's passengers. The card in my pocket is small. The part that matters is what I had to learn before anyone handed it to me.
